Looking for a safe, caring place for a senior that is affordable and in New Hampshire? This is a common, relevant, senior citizen scenario: Mom’s, Dad’s or maybe both parent’s circumstances have changed (or uncle’s and aunt’s). Perhaps they need a little more help with making meals, doing laundry, cleaning, or need medication reminders, but they aren’t ready for a nursing home. They want to remain as independent as possible, yet, you don’t feel like it is best for them to continue living in their present situation.
Laconia Housing has made it their mission to provide affordable housing for seniors; helping them maintain their independence while providing them with the services they need. They offer many affordable apartments in downtown Laconia: Sunrise Towersand Tavern Inn Apartmentsfor seniors 62 and over, or disabled; and their newest property Sunrise House, opening late summer 2019, for applicants meeting the same criteria.
Nancy Shannon, RN, who works at Sunrise Towers, says that, “a lot of clients come here after losing a spouse and their house has fallen into disrepair.” They are nervous about making a change but then they come here and find, “there are people their own age they can meet up with in the community rooms and go out and do things with people their own age. People go out and take the bus shopping, to Empire Hair salon and to local events like the summer concert series.”
Laconia Housing offers Granite State seniors three different programs. The Choices For Independence Programor CFI, is open to NH seniors and adults with chronic illnesses who medically qualify and are eligible for Medicaid. Nursing services, laundry, housekeeping, and meals are provided in the CFI program. And if a NH resident is eligible, a case manager will be assigned and a personalized care plan will be developed to suit their individual needs. The Congregate Housing Services Program (CHSP), subsidized by state grants, offers residents personal care services, transportation, meals, housekeeping, and laundry. Nursing services and personal care are also offered by Laconia Housing’s Home Health Agency.
Judy Downing whose Mom came to live at Sunrise Towers after having tried out a nursing home tells how her Mom’s outlook and quality of life totally changed upon the move. Downing said, “When my Mom was at a nursing home she became very paranoid that she needed to hide all of her belongings because she felt everyone was trying to take her things. When she moved into Sunrise Towers and realized her independence and that she could lock her door and that her place was her own, she felt safe. She was happy to have visitors and she joined in at all the social events. She would hop in a taxi alone or with friends and go shopping. She felt secure and like the staff really cared about her and that there was always someone here to help.”
Kim Smith, Residence Service Coordinator, and Manager adds, “I love the fact that I can bring somebody in and help them be more social and independent. This improves their quality of life immensely. This is what I would want for my parents. I try to give the kind of customer care I would want my parents to have. I work very closely with the families. Some of them live as far away as Colorado and California and I will contact them if I notice anything and they can contact me anytime if they have any questions with what is happening with their parents.”
